Aveedon's Dovima and the Elephants

I did a post a little while back on the famous model Dovima. I mentioned the photograph taken by Richard Aveedon, of her in a full length Dior gown between two elephants in 1955. This photograph has been described one of the most instantly recognizable images in fashion history. In an auction of Avedon’s work held in Paris over the past weekend, Dior bid for the right to bring Dovima home. Christian Dior paid €841,000 ($1.1 Million) for a seven-foot-tall print of the iconic image, setting a new sales record for Avedon’s work in the process.

"The 65 Avedon photographs in this sale represented not only the largest ensemble of his works to ever hit the market, but also offered several unique and extremely rare items,’ says Christie's, the auctioneers. ‘Proceeds will initiate The Richard Avedon Foundation’s endowment in support of its philanthropic mission." The auction of 65 works from the Richard Avedon Foundation raised a total of €5.5 million.

Anytime this classic glam look comes back in style, you can't help but want to go look for some authentic pieces at your favorite vintage store. One of my favorite skirts here at Borough Vintage is a plaid cream and brown 1950s waffle weave skirt. Take a look at how I recreated the above Louis Vuitton 50s inspired Fall 2010 runway look. I paired the 1950s skirt with a cute and classic yellow pointelle sweater, 1950s cream satchel, and tan Mary Jane pumps to finish the look. Fashion History: Donyale Luna

Donyale Luna, born as Peggy Anne Freeman, was the first African American model to appear on the cover of Vogue (March 1966). An article in Time magazine published in April 1966, "The Luna Year," described the Luna as "a new heavenly body who, because of her striking singularity, promises to remain on high for many a season. Donyale Luna, as she calls herself, is unquestionably the hottest model in Europe at the moment. She is only 20, a Negro, hails from Detroit, and is not to be missed."

Although the names printed on her birth certificate say otherwise, she insisted that her biological father was a man with the surname Luna and that her mother was Mexican. According to the model, one of her grandmothers was reportedly an Irishwoman who married a black interior decorator. Whether any of this background is true is uncertain. In the mid 1960s, a relative described Luna as being "a very weird child, even from birth, living in a wonderland, a dream."

According to Judy Stone, who wrote a profile of Luna for The New York Times in 1968, the model was "secretive, mysterious, contradictory, evasive, mercurial, and insistent upon her multiracial lineage -- exotic, chameleon strands of Mexican, American Indian, Chinese, Irish, and, last but least escapable, Negro."

During the late sixties and early seventies, Luna appeared in several films produced by Andy Warhol. In the late 1960s, in an interview, she expressed her fondness for LSD: "I think it's great. I learned that I like to live, I like to make love, I really do love somebody, I love flowers, I love the sky, I like bright colors, I like animals. [LSD] also showed me unhappy things -- that I was stubborn, selfish, unreasonable, mean, that I hurt other people." May 17, 1979 Luna died in Rome, Italy, in a clinic, after a drug overdose.

True Style: Julia Sarr-Jamois

If you haven't seen Londoner Julia Sarr-Jamois in the streetstyle section of your favorite magazine or blog...you will. She's a 22 year old Londoner that stopped modeling to do something more creative and is now the Fashion editor for Wonderland Magazine. In her interview with testmag she admits to "letting her Afro get in the way" and making too many fashion mistakes to say. Regardless of how many fashion mistakes she's made, Julia's quirky style and flawless afro has made quite an impression.

Style Icon: Dovima

Discovered in the streets of New York, her hometown, Dovima's overnight success brought her to be one of the highest paid models of the fifties. Dovima was transformed into the face of haute couture in the 1950s, what Christian Dior called the "New Look". Famous photographer, Richard Aveedon, described Dovima as "the last of the great elegant, aristocratic beauties...the most remarkable and unconventional beauty of her time." She appeared on the cover of all the major fashion magazines, working with many of the major photographers of her time. Dovima and Aveedon's "Dovima with Elephants" became one of the most famous fashion pictures of all time and can be found in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum.

"The ideal of beauty then was the opposite of what it is now. It stood for an extension of the aristocratic view of women as ideals, of women as dreams, of women as almost surreal objects. Dovima fit that in her proportions."

-Richard Aveedon

True Style: Joyce Bryant

Joyce Bryant, nicknamed "The Black Marilyn Monroe", may not be as well known as the other singers of her time but four octave voice along with her incredible style gained her a strong reputation in the 50's . Bryant wore gorgeous ultra feminine mermaid dresses that were extremely provocative for her time. Her dresses were so tight that sometimes she had to be carried off the stage after her performances. In an attempt to show up the famous singer Josephine Baker, Bryant sprayed her hair with silver radiator paint and the "Bronze Blonde Bombshell" came to life. Joyce Bryant regularly appeared in magazines such as Jet and Life and was considered to be one of the most beautiful black women of her time. Just as her career was beginning to take off Bryant was ready for its end. The spray began to damage her hair and Bryant began to have second thoughts about her image. In 1955, Joyce Bryant denounced her career to become an evangelist. Bryant later went back to entertaining in the late 60's. Bryant's music career may have abruptly ended but her style lasts forever.
